In 1991, three men, driven by a deep passion for preserving U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy history, invested their own money to start what eventually became the Grissom Air Museum. Located in Peru, Indiana, next to the Grissom Air Reserve Base, this museum features indoor and outdoor displays of former U.S. Air Force and Navy aircraft and the pilots' stories behind them. Twenty-eight planes have been painstakingly restored through funds raised by the museum and are beautifully displayed outside the museum. All the aircraft are on permanent loan from the Air Force and include the oldest of eight remaining B-58 Hustlers in the world, as well as fighters, bombers, trainer jets and more. A flat, paved walking path guides guests around the outdoor display of the various aircraft, and for a great bird's eye view, be sure to climb the observation tower. If you're lucky, you may catch a low-flying aircraft as it lands or takes off from the air reserve base located across the street. Be sure to spend time inside the museum looking through the exhibits from former military pilots, an ejection capsule, a J-57 turbojet engine and sitting in the cockpit of a McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom. Displays change yearly, offering each visit a different experience. A traveling exhibit also changes throughout the year. A well-stocked gift store offers items from all four arms of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

The Grissom Air Museum has parking for rigs of all sizes in their large, paved parking lot, and it's incredibly convenient to book an overnight stay through the user-friendly Harvest Hosts website or app. While the parking lot is large, the museum does limit overnight stays to four RVs. If you are passing through the area and just want to visit the museum for a couple of hours, call ahead to ensure there's enough room for your rig to park alongside the Harvest Hosts' guests. The Grissom Air Museum offers RVers a chance to learn more about military aircraft and then spend an evening watching the stars peek out above the likes of the famous F-14 Tomcat and other well-known military aircraft.
