Settled along the Crystal River, east of Marble, Colorado, in Gunnison County sits one of the most photographed structures in the state: The Crystal Mill. Constructed in 1882, the mill served as a powerhouse for local mines that produced silver, zinc and lead. The success of other towns, such as Leadville, encouraged a group of silver prospectors to the area. And the construction of a wagon road allowed the newly founded Crystal City to grow to a population of nearly 600 by 1883. Crystal City’s survival relied on the silver mines, so it was necessary to implement a more efficient extraction method of silver ore from nearby areas. There are many breathtaking scenic drives in North America; the Overseas Highway in Florida, Pacific Coast Highway in California and U.S. Route 101 in Oregon are a few that quickly come to mind. Getting out and exploring Savannah is a relatively easy task. Whether by land or by sea, options for seeing Savannah are plentiful. We chose the sea option aboard one of Savannah River Boat Cruises’ ships. We opted for the narrated harbor tour, settled into a chair on the upper deck next to the food and beverage bar and waited for our 90-minute tour to begin. The river cruises leave out of the port on River Street, which is itself a great place to explore in the city. Check in at the ticket office first before heading to the riverboat, located just across the street. Savannah is full of rich and eclectic American history. This town begs visitors to get out, walk and explore this unique riverside town. Each area of the city offers a different experience from the next and spending at least five or more days in this city will give you the opportunity to see the best of Savannah. A day strolling up and down River Street is a must. Just steps from the Savannah River, the old cotton warehouses line the cobblestone streets. This issue, I’m going to take you along on another journey I took directly before Hurricane Zeta. If you read the last issue, then you know all about me arriving on the heels of a hurricane in New Orleans. Well, before I could arrive in New Orleans, I had to wait for it to pass through my location in Galveston Bay, Texas, as well. The Galveston Bay of Texas is far less-traveled than New Orleans.
