When we first started traveling 4 years ago we had 3 small dogs, two Shih Tzus and a miniature dachshund, all teenagers. At the northern tip of the Million Dollar Highway lies Ouray, Colorado. Also called the “Switzerland of America, ” this beautiful village is well worth the twisting mountain roads it takes to get there. It lies along Highway 550 in southwestern Colorado, along with other beautiful towns like Ridgway and Silverton. If you are a fan of picturesque mountain views, good beer and friendly, small-town vibes, Ouray should be at the top of your list to visit! There are plenty of country songs about taking the gravel road, or the road less traveled or the back road. Even if country music is not your style, we can all see the benefit of taking the back road. The idea of slowing down and expecting to see something new and unique is exciting to almost everyone, but we have to be intentional about it. When we considered a spring travel destination this year, we decided to return to Charleston, South Carolina, but we chose to do it differently this time.
